Recorded prior to 16 June 1951, Vienna. The final two movements were conducted by Herbert Häfner, after Klemperer had left for a concert tour in Greece with the Vienna Philharmonic. Vox issued the composite recording under Klemperer’s name, and without his knowledge. Klemperer then severed ties with Vox. His 28 November 1951 letter of protest reveals that Klemperer had intended to use his own “special ending” to the symphony. Häfner's role is credited on later reissues.
